How to check a video transcript

A repeatable review process for names, numbers, context and timestamps before you quote or publish.

1. Confirm the source

Open the original video. Check that the title, speaker, language and passage match the transcript you intend to use. Save the URL with your notes.

2. Review the high-risk details

Listen again to names, dates, amounts, negations and technical terms. A missing “not” can reverse a claim. Mark uncertain words instead of guessing.

3. Keep the surrounding context

Read the sentences before and after a quote. Preserve qualifications such as “may,” “in this study” and “under these conditions.” A summary may omit them.

4. Check timecodes with playback

Jump to a few cues near the beginning, middle and end. If timing drifts, adjust it in your subtitle editor. Approximate speech segments are not frame-accurate captions.

5. Separate quotation from interpretation

Label direct quotes, translations and your own notes. Keep the original text available so someone else can check your reasoning.
